Are you ready for another exciting astronomy phenomenon just after the total solar eclipse happened last month on July, 22nd? Are you ready to make a wish when you see those “shooting stars”? That’s right, the Perseid meteor shower is coming today!
The Perseid meteor shower is a prolific, predictable and one of the earliest observed meteor showers associated with a somewhat desolate legend known as “The Tears of St. Lawrence”. This annual meteor shower coincidently occurs roughly at the same day as the Saint’s death was commemorated on his feast day, Aug, 10. Laurentius, a Christian deacon, is said to have been martyred by the Romans in 258 AD on an iron outdoor stove. It was in the midst of this torture that Laurentius cried out:
“I am already roasted on one side and, if thou wouldst have me well cooked, it is time to turn me on the other.”
And the abundance of shooting stars seen annually between approximately Aug. 8 and 14 have become a symbolic way of remembering a saint’s feast day, known as St. Lawrence’s “fiery tears.”
Scientifically, meteor shower occurs when earth moves through a meteor stream, and are actually the dusty remains left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle.
